The Handbook only contains indicators, tools and information relevant to companies that transport, process, manufacture and package dairy products into food, beverages and other ingredients. A similar Guide is available for dairy producers and their marketing organizations.
View more information on this resource

Resource: Stewardship and Sustainability Guide for U.S. Dairy

The Guide and supporting handbooks help dairy producers and processors in their efforts to voluntarily: Communicate about sustainability; Demonstrate progress where it matters most; Create long-term economic growth; Build consumer trust. This in turn supports a growing number of buyers of milk and dairy products that are interested in this information to understand the sustainability performance of their supply chains.

The indicators in the Guide are based on the Innovation Center's lifecycle assessment studies and practical input from the industry members and other experts including NGOs, government organizations, customers and academics. They can be used by dairy farmers and dairy processors in conjunction with Innovation Center tools like F?arm Smart?TM, Plant Smart?TM and Fleet Smart?TM, to track their progress over time and to identify areas for efficiencies and opportunities.
View more information on this resource

Resource: Water Quality Index for Agricultural Runoff

Gives producers a complete picture of their water quality instead of focusing on just one aspect such as temperature, nutrients or pesticide content.
View more information on this resource

Resource: Reducing Risk: Landscape Approaches to Sustainable Sourcing

Businesses facing climate change, water shortages, or community relations issues can improve their bottom line while also protecting biodiversity and improving rural livelihoods by using a "whole landscape" approach to land management. This is the major finding of a new report from The Landscapes for People, Food and Nature Initiative, a collaboration of nine of the world's leading anti-hunger, conservation and development organizations. This report highlights how some visionary companies that rely upon coffee, cocoa, water, and other resources in the developing world are going beyond piecemeal sustainability projects to take a more holistic approach.
View more information on this resource

Resource: Farm Smart

Farm Smart 1.5 provides dairy producers with their farm's environmental footprint.
