I'm looking to see if any environmental agency or technical assistance provider has prepared a training curriculum that informs dry cleaners about best management practices to reduce the potential for environmental spills and leaks at their facilities. So far, my internet research has uncovered a California Air Resources Board document entitlted "Curriculum for the Environmental Training Program for Perchloroethylene Dry Cleaning Operations." News: White House Announces Executive Order on Industrial Energy Efficiency, including Combined Heat and Power

Today, President Obama signed an Executive Order to accelerate investments in industrial energy efficiency, including combined heat and power (CHP). Accelerating investment in industrial energy efficiency in a way that benefits manufacturers, utilities, and consumers can improve American manufacturing competitiveness and create jobs while improving our nation's energy system and reducing harmful emissions. The Executive Order: sets a national goal of 40 gigawatts (GW) of new CHP installation over the next decade; directs agencies to foster a national dialogue through ongoing regional workshops to encourage the adoption of best practice policies and investment models that overcome the numerous barriers to investment, provide public information on the benefits of unlocking investment in industrial energy efficiency, and use existing Federal authorities that can support these investments; and directs the Departments of Energy, Commerce, and Agriculture, and the Environmental Protection Agency, to coordinate actions at the Federal level while providing policy and technical assistance to states to promote investments in industrial energy efficiency.

News: Nominations Being Accepted for Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Awards

Are your colleagues doing chemical research that includes reducing the use or generation of hazardous chemicals? Substituting an enzymatic reaction for a chemical one? Using a safer solvent? Finding a synthetic pathway that creates less waste? If so, their work involves green chemistry. Many researchers including Nobel Lauriat Bob Grubbs are doing excellent work in the field without necessarily identifying their work as green chemistry. Encourage your qualified colleagues to consider submitting nominations for the Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Awards. This prestigious award recognizes significant accomplishments in five categories each year.

Resource: P2 Data Collection Tools

NEWMOA developed this online resource to enable P2 and environmental assistance programs to share their P2 data collection tools. The overall purpose of this effort is to provide a way for programs to share these tools so that they can learn from each other and not have to reinvent them. P2 data collection tools include surveys, worksheets, self-certification forms, protocols and standard operating practices (SOPs) for follow-up to P2 technical assistance visits, quality management plans (QMPs), and/or checklists that P2 programs use to collect information from their clients. These data collection tools are used to understand the behavioral, environmental, and financial results from site visits, workshops or training events, and in response to an email, phone inquiry, or other social media technology. Users can customize their Search based on the relevant sector or topic, type of P2 activity, or type of P2 data collection tool used. They can also Add their own data collection tools to the system.

Those steps include the "how-to" suggestions for: Taking your organization's temperature; Creating alignment; Establishing your starting point; Creating and prioritizing sustainable initiatives; Implementing, measuring and monitoring your plan. Getting Started also includes information on making the business case for a SFM program. This includes outlining a process for the program and finding the right approach for your organization that is aligned with available time and resources. Finally, one of the most valuable sections of this guide includes case studies of three organizations that are on the path of Sustainable Facility Management. In looking at how it's done, we were able to solicit input from three organizations that are taking different paths, with different levels of available resources. They have shared their goals, approaches, results, and their lessons learned.
