The video is based on the UNDP-GEF Global Healthcare Waste Project mercury waste management guidelines and was produced with support from UNEP and the government of Norway. It supports the WHO-HCWH Global Mercury Free Initiative goal of developing replicable models of sound mercury waste management in the health sector. It is available in Spanish and English and is adaptable to other languages. It is targeted for health care workers, and will be disseminated and used in developing countries.
View more information on this resource

News: Report: Medical waste a problem in developing nations

There are significant challenges with the proper management and disposal of medical waste in many developing countries in the world, an investigator wrote in a report to the United Nations. Calin Georgescu, executive director of the National Centre for Sustainable Development in Bucharest, Romania, issued the report as a special investigator to the Human Rights Council. Some 20% to 25% of the total waste generated by health care establishments is regarded as hazardous and could create health and environmental risks if not managed properly, he said. Health care waste includes used needles often referred to as sharps, anatomical and pathological waste, old or expired chemical products and pharmaceuticals, radioactive materials and infectious waste. The report found that medical waste around the world is often mixed with general household waste and either disposed in municipal waste facilities or dumped illegally.
Read

Resource: P2 Data Collection Tools

NEWMOA developed this online resource to enable P2 and environmental assistance programs to share their P2 data collection tools. The overall purpose of this effort is to provide a way for programs to share these tools so that they can learn from each other and not have to reinvent them.

P2 data collection tools include surveys, worksheets, self-certification forms, protocols and standard operating practices (SOPs) for follow-up to P2 technical assistance visits, quality management plans (QMPs), and/or checklists that P2 programs use to collect information from their clients. These data collection tools are used to understand the behavioral, environmental, and financial results from site visits, workshops or training events, and in response to an email, phone inquiry, or other social media technology.

Users can customize their Search based on the relevant sector or topic, type of P2 activity, or type of P2 data collection tool used. They can also Add their own data collection tools to the system.
View more information on this resource

News: Ohio County Collects Old, Unused Prescription Drugs

Trumbull County, Ohio, residents dropped of thousands of expired or unused prescription drugs on Sept. 21 as part of Operation: Empty Medicine Cabinet. Across the country, unused and expired pharmaceuticals are polluting our waterways, poisoning our children, and putting our public safety at risk. Today, Slaughter announced that she has introduced H.R. 2939, the Pharmaceutical Stewardship Act, legislation that would provide Americans with a convenient way to safely dispose of their pharmaceuticals and ensure that they are kept out of drinking water and out of the hands of unsuspecting children or criminals. The Pharmaceutical Stewardship Act would set up a nonprofit corporation financed by pharmaceutical producers which would be responsible for establishing comprehensive drug take-back programs in every state. The bill would also set up a commission to develop a strategy to prevent pharmaceutical contaminants from polluting our waterways and environments from production to disposal.
Read

News: MI: Holt dentist receives environmental loan

State DEQ officials today announced a $31,609 pollution prevention loan awarded to a Holt dental clinic to fund the purchase and installation of a new digital x-ray system, eliminating wastes from the company's former conventional x-ray system.
Read

News: Health Industry Group Launches Green Purchasing Program

The health industry is launching a common set of tools to ensure that environmentally preferred products are available and cost-competitive. All those involved in the life cycle of pharmaceuticals --from design through manufacture, use and disposal -- can help reduce pharmaceutical waste. The site provides information on the Pharmaceutical Waste Product Stewardship project, which is funded by the EPA Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) to develop a comprehensive strategy to address the issue of proper disposal of unwanted medicines and personal care products in the western Great Lakes states. The project will fund a mail back collection program for Great Lakes basin communities in Wisconsin for two years and seek a more sustainable long term solution by using a product stewardship approach to managing and reducing pharmaceutical waste in the states of Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, New York, and Pennsylvania.
View more information on this resource
