Compact Fluorescent Lighting in America: Lessons Learned on the Way to Market [PDF]
Abstract: The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has released the report, Compact Fluorescent Lighting in America: Lessons Learned on the Way to Market. Prepared by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), the report provides an analysis of the market introduction of compact fluorescent lighting (CFL) in the U.S., with an emphasis on identifying lessons that could be applied to the market introduction of other new lighting technologies, such as solid-state lighting (SSL). The report is based on extensive review of CFL literature, interviews with CFL manufacturers regarding their experiences, and PNNL?s own experience with DOE?s CFL market introduction programs. Key findings related to market structure/conditions, consumer wariness, product performance and reliability, utility give-away programs, retail promotion, and other marketing and consumer education efforts provide valuable lessons for government, industry, and energy efficiency organizations. The Department commissioned the report to assist and inform planning for successful market introduction of emerging technologies such as SSL. The findings will guide DOE in its overall planning for SSL commercialization support activities, and can be applied to other technologies that emerge from the DOE research portfolio as well.
