Profile:

  • The USAF Dental Evaluation & Consultation Service (DECS) was established on 1 October 1976 (formerly USAF Dental Investigation Service) by then Air Force Regulation 162-7 to provide investigative guidance and assistance for all USAF dental personnel. DECS consists of clinical, laboratory, and consultative capabilities maintained as a detachment of the USAF School of Aerospace Medicine at Brooks Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX. DECS is located at Great Lakes Naval Training Center, IL along with the Naval Institute for Dental and Biomedical Research and the US Army Dental and Trauma Research Detachment. The organization has been set up specifically to solve operational problems and to evaluate methods, techniques, procedures, equipment, and materials as identified by military dental activities and by the office of the Air Force Surgeon General. In addition, DECS supports military medical centers and dental training programs by providing continuing education lectures and technical assistance for investigations that contribute to the training programs. DECS is currently guided by Air Force Instruction 47-101. DECS consists of four operational sections: Materials Evaluation, Equipment Evaluation, Facility Standards and Design, and Infection Control and Safety. As their names imply, the Materials and Equipment Evaluation Sections are concerned with laboratory and clinical-user evaluations of products that come under their respective areas of responsibility. For example, the Materials Evaluation Section typically evaluates products such as amalgams, composite resins, cements, impression materials, etc. The Equipment Evaluation Section evaluates dental chairs, units, lights, x-ray processors, sterilizers, etc. The Facility Standards and Design Section is responsible for reviewing plans for building new dental clinics or renovating/remodeling existing facilities. Infection Control and Services deals with course administration and issues related to radiology, infection control and safety.
