A Nearly Carbon-Neutral Conference Model: White Paper/Practical Guide
This document was created to help stage nearly carbon-neutral (NCN) conferences based on a model first implemented at UC Santa Barbara (UCSB) in May of 2016 . Compared to fly-in conferences, this approach can reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions a hundredfold. This document both explores the rationale behind this approach and provides a step-by-step guide for staging such events. The UCSB team hopes to create a unified software package to further simplify coordinating NCN conferences in the near future. However, given the urgent need to globally reduce our GHG emissions, this document is being released less than a month after the UCSB event so that additional NCN conferences can be staged in the interim. An individual familiar with WordPress installations should be able to have a conference space (website) prepared in less than a day.
