GLRPPR Sector Resource: 2013 Case Study: The Biosecurity Research Institute

Title:
2013 Case Study: The Biosecurity Research Institute

Abstract:
The Biosecurity Research Institute (BRI), a $54 million facility that develops safer methods to minimize the impact of pathogens on the nation's food supply, recently expressed interest in becoming a more environmentally efficient building. Due to Kansas State University's improvement mission to become one of the top 50 public research universities, Kansas State was forced to reevaluate its current HVAC system in order to support the desired expansion. The 2013 E2/P2 Intern researched waste-reducing solutions designed to help the facility lower their operating costs, regulatory compliance burdens, and environmental footprints. The intern was able to identify five research projects, three of which were implemented, are in progress, or are currently being evaluated. Implemented: Air-handling units scheduling and setbacks In Progress: Irrigation moisture and rain sensors Evaluation in Progress: Water-cooled condenser units chiller tower Further Research Required: Indoor lighting fixture replacements and occupancy sensors Not Recommended: Outdoor lighting replacements
