GLRPPR Sector Resource: Harper College RCx Case Study

Title:
Harper College RCx Case Study

Abstract:
Harper College is a community college located about 25 miles northwest of Chicago in Palatine, IL. This comprehensive community college has served the area with a variety of educational opportunities and initiatives since 1967. The Harper campus consists of several buildings spread across almost 200 acres. Harper College recently participated in the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity building retro- commissioning (RCx) program offered through the Illinois Smart Energy Design Assistance Center. In exchange for a commitment to implement recommended energy- conserving measures, SEDAC provided guidance and analysis to Harper College for three buildings, a partnership that ultimately yielded significant energy and cost savings for the College. Harper College's Building X, Building Y, and Building Z comprise 269,529 square feet, which is approximately 25% of the total campus square footage. These three buildings were built in 2004 and have been well maintained. Retro-commissioning is a process that seeks to improve how building equipment and systems operate. Buildings X, Y, and Z presented an excellent opportunity for analysis due to their high energy usage and potential for large savings. An approved SEDAC retro-commissioning provider, Exp US Services, Inc., performed the RCx analysis for Harper College.
