SERDP and ESTCP efforts have encompassed a range of issues related to Cr(VI). The major areas of research and demonstrations include the following: Fundamental Mechanisms of Corrosion Inhibition; Alternatives to Chromate Conversion Coatings and Pretreatments; Alternatives to Chromated Primers; Alternatives to Adhesive Bond Primers and Sealants; Development of Complete Cr(VI)-Free Coatings Systems; Alternatives to Chromated Surface Treatments on Magnesium Alloys; Alternatives to Hard Chrome Plating; Coating Removal Technologies to Reduce Exposure to Cr(VI); Non-Destructive Inspection Techniques for Reduced Maintenance on Cr(VI)-Containing Coatings; Development of Accelerated Corrosion Test Protocols for Qualification of Cr(VI) Alternatives; and Reducing Cr(VI) Emissions from Welding Operations.
