Development of Refraction Index Sensors for in situ Monitoring of Machine Cutting Fluids
Newell Instruments conducted an investigation of light refraction properties of machine cutting fluids in order to determine whether a refractive index measurement technology developed at the University of Illinois (and licensed to Newell Instruments) could be used for in situ monitoring of machine cutting fluids.
The refractive index sensors developed for the project are discussed with results obtained from a number of cutting fluids. Due to the complexity and variation in cutting fluids, the investigation was expanded to examine additional light characteristics of cutting fluids. A new sensing technology incorporating fluid color analysis, fluid light transmission, and fluid
light scattering was developed and results are presented for a variety of cutting fluids.
