Disposal of Unwanted Medicines: A Resource for Action in Your Community

The Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant, with funding from the U.S. EPA Great Lakes National Program Office, has developed this toolkit to assist communities that are considering a take-back or other disposal program for unwanted pharmaceuticals. The toolkit includes an introduction to the environmental issues associated with unwanted medicine disposal, a collection of case studies documenting successful programs initiated by communities in the United States and also in Canada, Europe, and Australia to address unwanted medicines, and sample outreach materials that communities can use to educate the public about the issue. A summary of state legislation to address pharmaceutical take-back and return programs; a bibliography of literature on pharmaceuticals, human health and the environment; and information for nursing home and assisted living facilities are also included.
