GLRPPR Sector Resource: Drive Greener

Title:
Drive Greener

Abstract:
Blue Sky Energy's Drive Greener calculator allows you to purchase carbon offsets for driving a hybrid car, fuel-efficient car, standard car or SUV. A carbon offset is an amount of carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gas that is:

  • Taken from the air and stored (trees and plants do this as part of a natural carbon cycle), or
  • Prevented from being released into the air, or
  • Converted from a more potent to a less potent gas (methane traps heat in the earth’s atmosphere about 23 times better than carbon dioxide does)
  • Carbon offsets are measured in metric tons, where 1 metric ton = 1000 kilograms = 2,200 pounds or 1.1 tons.
Offsets may be purchased for one year or for the lifetime of the vehicle. You receive a certificate guaranteeing your carbon offset amount and a vehicle decal (static-cling) for your back window.
