Light-Duty Automotive and Fuel Economy Trends: 1975 Through 2005

Since 1975, EPA has published its annual Trends Report entitled: “Light-Duty Automotive Technology and Fuel Economy Trends: 1975 through 2005.” The report provides a historic time line of key fuel economy and technology usage changes related to light-duty vehicles (i.e., cars, vans, sports utility vehicles, and pickup trucks) sold in the United States. Fuel economy has remained steady for the past several years. Vehicle technology has advanced, including hybrid-electric vehicles and clean diesel technology which hold promise for significant fuel economy improvements. On this web page, you may download the complete report, plus its several appendices, all in PDF format.
